Training and research for technological progress

A lesson in research applied to industrial production, to share Varvel’s experience future sector professionals.

Varvel, the Bologna-based Group specialising in the production of gearboxes and mechanical speed variators, has been working with leading universities in the Emilia Romagna region for a number of years to form new, professional specialists and to pool the competence and equipment needed to develop new products and innovative solutions.

On the 19th December 2016, Varvel delivered a talk on possible uses for nano-particles in industry for Master’s degree students in the Physics Department of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia as part of the Characterization of Nanostructures course.

Direct contact with Varvel’s Research and Development department gave students an excellent idea of how research works in the industrial context. A real case history was presented for the occasion, concerning the optimization of efficiency in worm gearboxes with bronze worm gears. A special nano-additive was added to improve the tribological performance of the lubricant. This led to an improvement in gearbox functionality without any impact on production, without having to modify any standard components, and with only a negligible increase in cost. This practical case gave students an important glimpse into research as applied to Varvel’s production needs.

Varvel attaches a great deal of importance to its links with universities, as the company is intent on innovation and on maintaining the high levels of product quality and service that have always set it apart.

For 10 years now, Varvel has enjoyed a close and fruitful collaboration with leading universities in Emilia Romagna in the context of various schemes and projects of national and international importance. This collaboration has also led to the creation of new jobs and to the employment of new, qualified professionals. Some of the students and researchers who have participated in joint projects have gone on to join Varvel’s R&D department.

As Francesco Berselli and Mauro Cominoli, respectively President and General Manager of the Varvel Group tell us, “Research is key to progress in technology and to innovation. Our collaboration with universities, professors, students and researchers has allowed us to pool our knowledge and work together on ever more innovative projects.
